Educational Programs
Homework Club is offered at each Club location Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 4:45 for all club members. Club members have the opportunity to complete homework in a structured environment where staff serve as mentors and tutors. Club members are able to also receive reading help in order to strengthen their skills once homework is completed. This program is a great opportunity for staff to work one on one with a club member. Homework club also provides monthly incentives for children who attend and complete homework on a daily basis. The priority of homework club is to instill the message of achieving one’s goals through education and learning.
Computer Classes: Computer lab is offered to all members to help enhance their computer software knowledge, and keyboarding skills. Members can work with various software programs, which include in MS Office Suite. Members can also surf the NET with staff supervision. Computer Lab is held Monday through Friday for two hours a day during homework help and two additional hours during program time for all ages. Members can also do research and complete homework assignments.
Quiz Bowl – Four times a year, members test their wits by participating in Education Quiz Bowls. These quiz bowls consist of math and history questions. Members are given a list of questions to study and prepare for this activity. The staff, teachers, and college students generate questions. These Quiz Bowls are open to member’s ages 10 – 18 yrs. This activity helps members build a stronger memory while developing the necessary communication skills utilized in everyday life
Essay Contest – To help enhance members writing skills, essay contest are implemented for ages 9 –18. Age appropriate essay questions or topics are presented to members one month before the essay is due. Members can use books from the club, school, or local libraries to help write the essay. Members also have access to the Internet to help formulate their essay.
Cooking Class: Once a week members are offered a cooking class to help develop the skills of cooking and safety while in the kitchen. The members learn how to make basic meals/desserts they can prepare at home for themselves and their families. This unique opportunity also incorporates the members utilizing their basic math skills as they learn how to measure different ingredients.
